October In Review by Ms. Trump
October. October. It began with sandals, shorts, and a leftover sense of excitement from September. It ended with boots, warm jackets, snow and a sense of settling in. October always is a month with a certain transition—the ‘newness’ of the year begins to wear off and routine is established. By the end of the month some classes will be a week away from over, while for others the halfway point will be reached.
Routine at Strathmore High School carries with it a sense of contentment. For grade 10s, the initial nervousness and anxiety that existed at the beginning of the year has now been replaced with a strong sense of belonging; grade 12s have started planning their futures after SHS and are now focused on doing well in their courses; and grade 11s are finding themselves more secure in the halls – they have learned (albeit perhaps unconsciously) from their fumbles in grade 10 and are now on their way to becoming the new leaders of the school next year. The Learning Commons is jam-packed before classes and at lunch with students studying, and during Learning Strategies period, students can be seen meeting with their teachers for help.
Extra-curricular is also well underway now that October has come to an end. The SHS Cross Country team has successfully completed their season with some students attending Provincials. Volleyball is well underway and basketball season is fast approaching. The SHS football team has had an impressive season and the girls soccer team has battled both other teams as well as inclement weather. Spartan Council has been busy hosting a senior’s dinner and games night as well as fundraising on Halloween. The school also celebrated some former students at the Pillars of SHS ceremony honoring two former SHS grads for the successes they have achieved after high school.
It seems hard to believe that the school year is nearly a quarter over. Although the exuberant excitement of September has dissipated, it has been replaced with a large amount of pride from teachers and students alike. Regardless of the stormy weather to come, the battles on the field or in the gym, or the challenges of learning and achievement, the students and staff at SHS seem quite determined to continue to make the 2017-2018 school year fantastic.
We do have a number of important upcoming events such as the Spartan Council Community Christmas dinner on November 29th, and the Provincial Volleyball Tournament on the weekend of November 23-25.
